Som tum (green papaya salad)
Indulge in the refreshing flavors of som tum, a traditional Thai green papaya salad bursting with a harmonious blend of sweet, sour, and spicy notes.
Ingredients:
- 2 garlic cloves
- 2 limes, juiced
- 1/4 cup fish sauce
- 2 tablespoons palm sugar (or regular sugar)
- 3 crushed Thai bird peppers (optional or remove seeds to adjust)
- 2 cups shredded green papaya
- 8 to 10 cherry tomatoes
- 3/4 cup shredded carrots
- 3/4 cup long green beans, cut into 1" pieces
- 1/8 cup roasted peanuts, chopped for garnish(optional)
- 1 handful cilantro leaves for garnish
Instructions:
- Using a mortar and pestle, crush the garlic until it forms a paste.
- Include the chili peppers and gently crush them.
- Transfer to a different bowl and mix in the rest of the ingredients for the 'dressing'. Taste and adjust accordingly.
- In the mortar, combine the ingredients for the 'salad' filling it halfway. Crush the vegetables with the pestle.
- Pour in a portion of the dressing and gently pound it into the vegetables.
- Repeat this process until all the salad and dressing are well combined.
- Decorate with peanuts and cilantro
