German cabbage salad

Indulge in the flavors of Germany with this tangy and crunchy cabbage salad recipe. Perfect balance of sweet and sour notes in every bite.

Ingredients:

  • 4 slices bacon
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 small shallot (thinly sliced)
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 450g cabbage (cut into pieces)
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Cook the bacon in a medium skillet over medium heat until it becomes brown and crispy, which should take approximately 8 minutes. Once done, place the bacon on paper towels to remove excess fat, but keep the fat in the skillet. Next, add oil to the skillet and sauté the shallot until it turns golden, stirring occasionally for about 6 minutes. Add the caraway seed, vinegar, sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper to the skillet, and stir well to combine, making sure to scrape up any browned bits. Pour this dressing over the cabbage and mix it well to ensure it is evenly coated. Finally, taste the dish and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper before serving.
